The Library of the University of Gdańsk

The Library has a collection of over 1,400,000 volumes. This includes books and journals, including foreign publications, covering all fields of university subjects, particularly those taught at the University of Gdańsk. A significant part of the collection consists of publications concerning the sea and Pomerania. There are priceless special collections about the history and culture of Pomerania: manuscripts, old prints, cartographic publications, documents about social life and also audio-visual and multimedia collections. Among the Library’s cimelia are old texts from Polish and world literature, particularly Gdańsk texts, the so-called gedaniana.

Among them are works by outstanding representatives of Gdańsk historiography from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, such as Kasper Schütz, Reinhold Curicki and Gotfryd Lengnich. The Library is also in possession of a literary collection, including autographs, letters and other personal documents of Polish writers from the first half of the 20th century.

Apart from the resources in traditional forms, the library offers its readers increasingly more information in an electronic form, including, above all, access to electronic periodicals – over 40,000 titles. Thanks to widespread access to the Internet, it is possible to make available broad access to information about the library's own resources and to make use of information about the resources of other academic libraries in Poland and abroad. The UG Library is a co-creator of the Pomeranian Digital Library, which houses digital copies of the most valuable and rarest items in its collections. As one of seventeen such libraries in Poland – and the leading one in Pomerania – the Library of the University of Gdańsk has been designated to receive obligatory copies of books published in Poland, which will significantly increase the collections.

The Library of the University of Gdańsk includes 6 lending libraries, 23 reading rooms, 7 specialistic libraries, Main Library of the University of Gdańsk, 1000places in the reading-rooms. Annually over 1,000,000 books and journals pass through the hands of our readers.

In 2006 a new Main Library Building was added of the resources of the University of Gdańsk. It is the most up-to-date library in Pomeranian region covering a space of 80,700 cubic meters. Designed as a local center of scholary and scientific information, the library serves the entire academic community. The wholly computerized building is designed to offer free access to 500,000 volumes (books and journals), and 170,000 items in special collections (old prints, maps, films, audio materials etc.). It contains 500 places readers, 170 computer terminals and 32 rooms for individual study. In one day it can be visited by up to 2000 readers.
